Staff Spotlight – Scotty the Resident Artist

Hello everyone, Kev here welcoming you to the edition 10.5 of the Oddmall Vendor Spotlight! This will be a sporadic series to share with you all some of the people that keep Oddmall alive and well – whether it’s through assisting with events, helping run the Outpost, or just being a dang cool human being.

This week we’re going to be featuring our very own Scotty “BigStyle” Lees! For those who aren’t familiar, Scotty is one of Outpost buddies, but when he isn’t helping people with purchases he is busy putting together magnificent works of art for guests to peruse. Whether it is the spider stalking its prey on top of the clubhouse or the beautifully wood-burned gathering table, he has assisted Andy with creating many beautiful pieces to make the Oddmall Outpost such a fantastic experience!

Scotty identifies as a Djinn. BigStyle is all about granting wishes. Making the imaginary real is the creative force behind all of it. “Wishes Granted, Fees negotiable” is right on his card. Scotty gets the greatest satisfaction from bringing other people’s ideas and creations to this plane of existence, so we can play with them.

Originally established in Columbus Ohio, following a  brief desert expansion in Arizona, BigStyle Central is operated by Scotty in the Cleveland area with a loving family and a brain full of Star Wars knowledge, vintage pickup trucks, and some of the coolest art styles this side of the Cuyahoga.

When it comes to his art, it is very difficult to nail down just quite what Scotty’s style is, due to the vastness of mediums which he uses. Whether it be his beautiful grayscale “Mobile Homes” series, to his colorful Cosmic Unicorn, or the most recent line of Bleach t-shirt artwork, He’s always trying something new. His favorite job title ever? Magic Carpet repairman.

One of my favorite pieces that Scotty has made brings us for his love of Star Wars and how he incorporates it into his work. Referring specifically to his 4-T2 droid, he has done an amazing job bringing to life Mr. Lucas’ fantastical world – from the color and wear to the electronics, the little buddy comes to life. When asked how he was able to create such a lifelike model, Scotty simply replied, “Georgie is an old friend. He took me to Coruscant and let me get all the measurements and details I needed.”

When Scotty isn’t working at the Outpost or on art of his own, he is regularly found giving back to our community. Whether it be helping a kid with their Pinewood Derby car or providing art supplies, he is always happy to share his love of expression with others. Most recently, he has brought to life the weekly Community Art Night! If you haven’t checked it out, I would highly recommend it, whether you’ve never created before or are the ghost of Andy Warhol everyone is welcome to attend.

Every week, a new prompt is selected to help guide your creativity process, and you can spend hours with family, friends, archrivals, and Low Life peeps just working away at whatever you are feeling that Friday evening. Scotty has done a wonderful job setting up these events and providing an awesome environment to get your noggins flowing with cool ideas, so be sure to stop by and check it out!

So whether it be to peruse the wares of local artists at the Outpost (some of which actually are created by the man himself) or to attend the Community Art Night, come swing by to say hey to Scotty and quiz him on art technique or Star Wars trivia!
