Vendor Spotlight – Dominoes by Design

Hello everyone, Kev here welcoming you to the third edition of the Oddmall Vendor Spotlight! This will be a recurring series to share with you all some of your local vendors and attendees of Oddmall shows, highlighting their incredible talents, wonderful personalities and amazing creations.

This week, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Linda, owner and creator of Dominoes by Design. Linda makes resin art in the form of unique sets of dominoes, all with beautiful colors and creative designs! While dominoes are her long-time popular item, she has also branched out into other resin figures and items, as well as the new and exciting “Troll brains,” which are figures with mini trolls embedded within them!

While Linda began the domino business fairly recently, she has been creating and vending at Oddmall shows for an incredibly long time. “I just started again; I love Andy and everyone on his staff,” Linda shares to the humble writer 🙂, “I’ve been a vendor [at Oddmall] for over 10 years and for that reason I like to try Oddmall shows.” However, she goes on to share the occasional struggles that many other crafters come across in their time. “I need to figure out what people want. If someone has an idea, please let me know!”

When it came to deciding on her current medium for her art, it was her children that inspired her with their interest in dominoes. “The majority of dominoes on the market are pretty plain looking,” she remarks. “Mine are anything but plain. Where else would you find birthday candles, candy or crayons in a domino set?”

When it comes to creating the dominoes, Linda discusses how it takes a surprisingly long time to create. Most designs start with a clear base where objects can be added, so that the domino pips are clearly visible. This could take up to 24 hours to cure so that the back layer and color doesn’t sink into the clear layer, which would then take another 24 hours to cure once added. From there, it is a matter of trimming down edges and painting the pips of each domino.

The creative process that Linda works with is one that comes with a lot of free reign – the size of a domino being the only limitation. “Looking for items that will fit in a domino mold has become somewhat an obsession for me,” Linda adds. “I peruse candy and office supply aisles as well as toy aisles for little things. I order some trinkets from online sites. The Dollar Store can be a gold mine!”

One thing I personally admire about Linda and I’m sure others can greatly appreciate is her driving force and her goal from her crafting. “The purpose of my business is to sell enough to donate profits to food-insecure families I know and to the Kent Social Services.” Linda, who is a retired teacher, has seen first hand the families who struggle for food and as such has the incredibly noble goal to end food insecurity. She continues, “The problem is criminal in my opinion. Food is a RIGHT and should not be accessible only to financially secure families. I’m hoping to make enough in profits to contribute more than I could with my income alone.”

Linda and Dominoes by Design can currently be seen attending various Oddmall shows throughout the year, however her items can also be found online where you can shop their product or even request custom orders. Be sure to say hey and help with her just case of feeding the country!
